To all you recent grads starting a new career, here’s some advice for killing it in the real world..
After graduation, I was left with a lot of questions about what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go, which led to feelings of doubt. But now that I’ve left home and am standing on my own two feet, I want to share some things that helped me get to a place where I feel more confident. Keep scrolling to read on..
Start by seeking advice from older friends, siblings, etc.
The best way to start figuring out what you want to do is by chatting with older friends and siblings about how they ended up where they are and where they want to go. Knowing that some of the people you know who have it all together don’t have a perfect plan for their future and are still trying to figure it out can help you feel better about your own process. At the end of the day, you just have to take it one step at a time.
After graduation, I talked to my sister almost daily about how I was feeling and what I was looking into. Because of that, she was able to recommend a couple career paths and companies that would fit with my interests and personality.
She continues to encourage me to go for what I want, so here I am, writing a blog.. Thanks sis! And it's so important having someone in your life you can lean on, so find your personal guru, they’re the best.
It's okay not to know everything
The most important thing I’ve learned since graduating is that it’s okay to not know everything. And trust me, if you knew everything, your life would probably be pretty boring. It’s definitely more fun when you’re constantly exploring new things and learning from the people around you, and that doesn’t just apply to work and career things.
Which leads me to my next piece of advice..
Ask tons of questions
If you want to know more about something, just ask! There are tons of people out there that are more than willing to give you some answers and advice. You’re missing out on an opportunity by not asking, which is more stupid than asking a “dumb” question. So suck it up. ;)
Just go for it
Once you have an idea of where you want to be and what you want to do, just go for it. There’s no way to know what it’s going to be like without trying. But, you have to give it your all.
If it doesn’t end up being what you thought it would, at least you learned something and probably met some interesting people along the way.
As always, if you have any questions or thoughts for me, reach out or send me a comment below!
